The anatomy of a crochet pattern
Every part a buyer expects to see, in the order they expect it.
Why structure matters
Buyers skim a pattern before they start. When every section sits where they expect it, they trust you, and they come back for your next design.
The standard order
- Title and a short description of the finished item
- Skill level (Beginner, Easy, Intermediate, Experienced)
- Materials: yarn, amount, hook size and notions
- Gauge and finished size
- Abbreviations used in the pattern
- Pattern notes: construction, turning chains, terms used
- Instructions, row by row or round by round
- Finishing and assembly
- Copyright line and your contact or shop links
Pattern notes are underrated
This short list answers the questions testers ask most: is it worked top down or bottom up? Does the turning chain count as a stitch? Are rounds joined or worked in a spiral? Answer them once, up front.
